Why I want to be a tennis leader
by Evie Page

I can remember the very first day I started to play at Hylands tennis club, I was very shy, not that confident and I couldn’t play that well. But, as I have been playing at Hylands I think I have improved from when I started to play. I have achieved a lot from being part of the club, I have not only improved my game but, I have made new friends, received a Jack Petchy award and I have also been in a couple of girl leagues. I think to be a tennis leader you have to be committed and focused on what you are doing. There are many other reasons why I would love to be a tennis leader.
I think it is important to encourage young people to learn and enjoy the sport of tennis. When I started in orange group, I was very shy and timid but with help from Tina the coach and encouragement from James Willis and Luke Ellis (the two tennis leaders) I grew into the tennis player I am today. I also think it is good for the the younger children to have good role models to give them the support and encouragement they need. I enjoy working with younger people as I regularly help out with a brownie pack. I’m responsible for organising games, supervising activities and generally making sure that the brownies have lots of fun. I also help out at ‘messy church’ which is aimed at young families in our community to come to our church and learn about Bible stories through fun, games, songs and craft activities.
Before I started to play at Hylands I had no confidence and I didn’t go to any other clubs because I was too shy. But throughout the years I have been playing tennis at Hylands, I have not only joined in the girls league but, I have joined a youth club and a guides pack.
In the past three years, I have made many friends during tennis lessons and the girls league. I have made a bond with three girls; Jenna, Jennifer and Abbie and I think it would be good working beside them, as they are great team players.
I’ve shown my commitment to Hylands tennis club by attending 95% of my tennis lessons throughout the year and completing all my matches in the girls league. I have also shown commitment at my school by attending every football and netball match, as I am part of these teams.

At school, I am very committed to P.E and try my best in all the sports we learn. When we learn tennis, my teacher allows me to go round and help other pupils. When I help the other pupils, I use the skills and techniques I have learnt at Hylands and teach them to the other pupils. My P.E teacher is very supportive in my progression in tennis and regularly asks me how I’m getting on.
An achievement that I’m very proud of is winning a Jack Petchy award. It has given me a lot of confidence in myself.
I greatly appreciate the work and time that Tina, Giorgio and all the other tennis leaders put in to make us younger players who we are today. I think Hylands wouldn’t be what it is without Tina and Giorgio and I would love to give something back by being a tennis leader.
What I wish to gain from this experience is the coaching knowledge and leadership skills, as I intend to pursue a career in physical education or tennis coaching. And I feel that the credibility of being a Hylands tennis leader will look very impressive on my C.V.
Once I have completed the course, I will be able to play an important role in supporting the young people in our tennis club and also in the wider community by helping at coaching sessions held at Albany School. I am also very excited about the new courts and development at Albany school which I think will encourage more people in the local area to come and play tennis.
I hope that you can see that I have written this essay with a lot of passion and I hope you can forgive my spelling or grammar mistakes. I hope you can see by reading this, the passion I have for tennis and I hope you will be proud of me as I play a part in the next generation of tennis leaders at Hylands Tennis club.
